“It is 1939. Nazy Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

By her brother graveside, Liesel Meminger’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is ‘The Grave Digger’s Handbook’, left there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burning, the mayor’s wife’s library, wherever there are books to be found.

But these are dangerous times. When Liesel’s foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel’s world is both opened up and closed down.

In superbly crafted writing that burn with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.”

It was my second book of Markus Zusak after ‘I Am The Messenger’ and it has the same kind of book about young-adult related story. While ‘I Am The Messenger’ takes a modern time setting, ‘The Book Thief’ seems more classic and has more gloomy feelings in the setting of Nazi era in Germany.

If you haven't watched the movie, here's the official trailer:

I have watched the movie first then read the book later. In my opinion, I love the movie better because it was more real and the actors & actresses could express each character very well (after I compared with the original characters in the book). But there are many stories, especially about Liesel and Rudy, in the book that were not included in the movie. And many other stories that will give us a deeper understanding about each characters. So I suggest to watch the movie first then read the book later. ^^

In a short of words, this book tell a story of a girl named Liesel who was left by her mother and her little brother (who died in the train on their way to Himmel Street) to live with her foster family Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann. Liesel loves books, her papa Hans Humbermann loves playing accordion, and her mama Rosa Hubermann loves to swear. ^^ Though it was hard in the first time Liesel moved to her new family, but in the end it turned out that they bound love and try to protect each other even for Max (the Jew they hide in the basement). When times get rough day by day when mama lost her only job, and Max should find him way out from Himmel Street, then papa should go to the army, Liesel finds her only hope, love and fun only in her best friend Rudy.

This book will teach us something important about family, friends, and love. When Nazi thought people to hate the Jews, are we gonna just hate them irrationally? What makes us different from other people? Does it mean if we are not in the same race then we are enemy to each other?

It only reminds me that no wars can stop a war. War only lead us to nothingness, a sorrow life that left after the meaningless war. This book narated by ‘The Death’ and has a sad ending, but still it worthed to read beacuse we could get something like a moral value and we can feel warm in our heart after finish reading Liesel Meminger’s story. Though it’s a fiction yet it feels like a real story.
